Ash Benches for the RHS Flower Show
We made these benches for display in the first RHS Flower Show at Chatsworth House. The five benches and a table, as well as fencing, planters and other woodwork, were commissioned for the 'Garden for a Changing Climate'. This garden was designed to showcase the new approaches to gardening that may be needed as the climate changes this century, with an emphasis on drought-resistant plants, rainfall collection and the use of reclaimed and locally-sourced materials. The garden was featured on 'Gardener's World', and our benches drew much attention.
We made a steambox to heat and soften the ash, and created different formers to bend the thin pieces of timber into the curved pieces needed for the legs and rails. We also turned one single huge board of ash into the tops of all three of the curved benches.
